Week commencing 22nd February

This week we are starting a new three week topic on Geometry and Properties of shape.

Over the next three weeks, the children will learn to name lots of 2D and 3D shapes. They will learn the difference between 2D and 3D shapes and will learn to name the 2D shapes on the faces of 3D shapes. They will learn the terminology/ vocabulary associated with shape such as sides, edges, faces and vertices and will become more confident in using these words when describing 2D and 3D shapes.

Some children find shape much easier than others. Shape is very visual and children who are more visual learners will find it easier. I noticed in class, when doing the statistics activities, that the children were a bit rusty on remembering their shape names – even the basic ones such as rectangle and triangle. For a lot of the children they might well need some back to basics revision of shape names, but they should soon remember them with practice.

Tuesday is an activity day – make sure you watch the video to go alongside the sheet. Get your craft boxes out again and be creative. You can use items such as spaghetti to construct some quite nice 3D shapes. The video also suggests making play-dough, which will be nice for the children to play with afterwards anyway if you have time.

There are lots of great shape songs and resources on the internet to have a look at. I’ve uploaded a few below. Plus, as usual, the true and false reasoning sheets, the fluency sheets Mathletics and TT Rockstars should all be attempted at least once during the week.
