Fluency:

Mondays – The adult reads the text modelling fluent reading and noticing sounds/digraphs and tricky words. Discuss meaning/story.
Tuesday – Blend to read, the children work through the text blending and sight reading tricky words.
Wednesday – Children read again. We notice the punctuation and grammar. E.g. noticing the start and end of sentences (capital letters and full stops) *A common misconception is that the end of the line is the end of the sentence so we do lots of work noticing full stops and counting the sentences etc.
Thursday – Read again focusing on expression and developing fluency.
Friday – Final read in the aim of sight reading with fluency.

Other areas of learning:

This half term our topic is Fantasy. We explore fantasy creatures/stories and superheroes. We do this topic through our special stories, our creative and our writing activities. We would love to see some of your fantastic imagination and role play at home!

This story of the week is Superkid (Claire Freedman), we will read this together during Tuesday’s teams meeting (11am).

We would like you to think about what you would be like as a superhero!
What would your power be?
Would you wear a mask or cape?
How would you help people?
Our writing activity (Thursday) will be putting all these ideas together, you could design your mask/costume beforehand. You could role play being your superhero, you could make any accessories you might need and you could think about a special superhero mission you would have! We would love to hear about your ideas on Tapestry!

In this topic we also explore real life superheroes such as Doctors, Nurses, Police, Fire Fighters and many more. Resources attached below. Each week we will focus on a different real life superhero, finding out what they do and how they help us! This week’s focus real life superheroes is Police.

Using the resources below we would like you to find out –

Who are the police? How do they help us? What special skills do they need to be police officers? What uniform do they wear? Why are they real life superheroes? Can you use a notebook like a detective does to write down things you notice, make a police badge with your name, role play being a police officer, can you remember the special number you need to ring the police and discuss when you should use it?
