Week commencing 8th November – maths

Monday and Tuesday will be continuing with our addition work. The children have all learnt how to use extended column method for addition. Please could you double check that they can do this independently at home. There are some challenge and extension sheets uploaded if they are secure with the method and they want something a bit harder to get stuck into. Complete what you can.

Wednesday – Friday will be learning how to use the expanded column method for subtraction. Please can you ensure that you teach this to your child as we won’t get another chance to teach it until later in the year. It will actually be a lot easier to teach it to your children 1:1 and the quality of learning should be a lot better than just me trying to get around 30 children, all of whom are very different abilities. If they don’t quite get it on day 1 that’s ok. We’ve allocated 3 days for it so that they can practice and consolidate the method (it’s not easy!). If they need the 3 days to consolidate not crossing 10 (exchanging) then that’s fine (you can write your own number sentences if needed). Move them on to exchanging when they’re ready. We’d do it that way if they were in class. Some take longer than others to grasp a method and that’s ok 🙂 .

The maths fluency sheets are also uploaded below. We do these once a week and they are differentiated to the children’s ability in maths.  All the children start with sheet 1 and move on to sheet 2 if they complete all of the questions correctly in 5 minutes. If you’re not sure which sheet matches your child’s ability then just start with sheet 1 and work up! Set a 5 minute timer and leave them to it – we give them no help in class with these. Use these as much as you like across the week. You could do one every day if it fits in with what you’re doing and you need them to be more independent for a while. The aim is to build the children’s speed and fluency with addition and subtraction within 20.
