School Council Meeting 24/25 #3

On Thursday 21st November our KS2 councillors attended a Zoom training workshop with some other primary schools to learn about British Values.

The British Values are key values that are important to people living in the UK today.  They are a set of ‘guidelines’ that help us to behave in an appropriate way and get along together.

In the UK, we are quite a small country with a mixed population so we can be free to be individuals and express ourselves, but must also be aware of how our actions and words might affect others.

I Really Do Matter

Let’s think about what this means for our school

Individual liberty

For example…

  • Choosing your own lunch
  • Being kind to others – choosing your words but considering the impact on others: “Is it kind? Is it helpful?”
  • Choosing your clothes on dress down days
  • What other choices can you think of that you have?

Rule of law

  • What rules do we have in school?
  • Why is it important to have rules?
  • What can we do if a rule isn’t working or if rules get broken?

Democracy

  • Voting for school councils
  • Adults voting for Prime Minister
  • Choosing end of term treats
  • Voting on after school clubs to run

Mutual respect and tolerance

  • Understanding and welcoming difference
  • Treating others as we would like to be treated
  • Celebrating and understanding different religions and festivals
  • Some of our children speak different languages

We shared ideas with the other schools about why it is important to watch or read the news, and talk about news stories – how do they make us feel?
