5L constructing bridges

The children learnt about the different types of bridges and their structural differences; beam, concertina and gate bridge. They learnt about the importance of structural supports to make the bridges strong and long lasting. The children demonstrated this by creating the different bridges using cards and investigating which type held the most weight. The also children learnt about the different types of bridges and their structural differences; beam, arch, suspension and cantilever or “truss.” The children then built a truss bridge using paper straws and masking tape. Year 5 have used tools to create a wooden truss bridge. The children have researched and evaluated different types of bridge designs. They have used a wide range of tools and equipment including; table hook, tenon saw, sand paper and wooden rods to perform practical tasks such as cutting, joining and finishing accurately.
