Week commencing 1st February

This week we are starting a new topic on Statistics (tally charts, pictograms and bar charts). This is the first time the children will have come across these as they are not taught in Year 1, though they may have been mentioned in passing in other subjects such as Science.

The children will learn how to create and interpret/ read each of the different graphs and charts. This week will be focusing on 1:1 correspondence for tally charts and pictograms. Next week they will need to be able to count in their 2s, 5s and 10s so that they can interpret charts and graphs represented in a slightly different way.

Monday’s and Wednesday’s lessons this week are practical activities which are introduced on the White Rose videos. The children can make their own tally charts on scrap paper, chalkboards or whiteboards, or use the ones I’ve copied onto the sheets. If you can get out on a walk for the Pictogram activity on Wednesday then that would be lovely 🙂

As normal, the fluency sheets are uploaded below for your children to complete on one or more days with a 5 minute timer. I’ve added a sheet 8 this week – I’ve no idea if it can be done in 5 minutes!!! It’s very tricky! Let me know! We hope that you and your children are starting to see their speed and fluency in basic Maths arithmetic improve with these sheets.

Finally, don’t forget that we’ll be setting 5 Mathletics tasks every week which tie in to the maths topic for that week. Plus TT Rockstars and Hit the Button are always available for extra times tables or number bonds practice.
